Welcome to The Old House, Bootle

The Old House in Bootle is an ideal location for exploring the Lake District. The House is in the village of Bootle, on the western side of the Lake District National Park and in the only part that also contains a beach! The village itself is about two miles from the coast with its own stop on the coastal railway nearby. There is a village shop and post office and a café on the outskirts of the village. The nearest pub is roughly two miles up the road. With good access to the coastal road

The Old House comfortably sleeps up to eight guests in three bedrooms on the first floor with two attic rooms above. It feels like a home, with furnishings that are comfortable without being precious, and a layout which lets people congregate and enjoy spending time together or spread out and catch half an hour’s peaceful reading in front of the fireplace or in the garden. It is especially popular with large family groups. The covered patio at the back of the house allows more ‘outside living’ in the summer than you would expect in the Lake District. The rest of the back garden is quite secluded – ideal for a bit of relaxation.

Many visitors to the Lake District National Park do not realise its borders extend all the way to the coast, which is one reason why Ravenglass, which is just four miles north of The Old House, is so peaceful. Almost triangular, the coastal hamlet sits at a point where the Esk, Mite and Irt rivers meet. Its location and river access made it an important Roman site and although little of their time here remains you can still see the remains of the enormous Roman bathhouse. The Victorian narrow gauge Ravenglass and Eskdale Railway was once used to transport copper and iron ore from the mines to the coast but is now a favourite with steam enthusiasts and families who appreciate its charm and the beautiful scenery through which it travels. It can also take you close to one of the starting points for ascending Scafell.

Muncaster Castle is also nearby, with a haunted castle and sanctuary for birds of prey as well as lovely gardens. Mountain bikers are spoiled for choice with miles of excellent off-road routes, and visitors also have the opportunity to ride horses or hire a boat and take to the water.
